Well, New Moon will arrive on store shelves Saturday, March 20th, but it appears that not all New Moon DVDs are built alike. In an effort to woo consumers to purchase the DVD from their stores, several retailers are sweetening the deal with special gifts, extra content, and exclusive packaging.
First of all, it looks like all DVD's will contain the standard 2-disc set--the movie and these special features: A revealing AUDIO COMMENTARY with Director Chris Weitz and Editor Peter Lambert; a riveting 6-PART DOCUMENTARY that takes you behind the scenes; exclusive band REHEARSAL FOOTAGE with Muse; and MUSIC VIDEOS from Death Cab for Cutie, Anya Marina and Mutemath.
So, Which New Moon DVD should you buy? Let's take a look at all the different offers... Keep in mind that some of these offers are available online only, and some of them will also be available in stores. Check with each retailer by clicking on the links below.. Almost all of these retailers also offer the Blu-Ray version as well, most of the with the same special gifts as the DVD version.
Borders is offering a "Borders Exclusive"($29.99), a 2-disc set with a 2-sided medallion. Here's their listing of special features: over 5 minutes of previously unreleased EXTENDED SCENES; INTERVIEWS with cast members Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, the Cullen Family, the Wolf Pack, the Volturi and Director Chris Weitz; unrivaled RED-CARPET FOOTAGE from the movie premiere; front row seats to The Twilight Saga: New Moon WEBCAST.
Target is selling the 3-Disc Deluxe Edition DVD with Bonus Collectible Film Cell (19.99 ONLINE), with the following features: Deleted Scenes, Introducing the Volturi Featurette, Frame by Frame: From Storyboard to Screen Featurette, Fandamonium: A Look at the Die Hard Fans, and The Beat Goes On: The Music of New Moon Featurette. Exclusive Bonus Collectible Film Cell is an authentic reproduction of a cell from the filming of the Twilight Saga: New Moon contained within a beautiful glossy photo. Each is individually numbered with goal foil lettering and measures approximately 5X7. Note (added 3/20/10): Target has put up a video sneak peek of their exclusive content on this page. You have to watch the trailer first, then a deleted scene entitled, "Bob's Bikes" will play.
Walmart has the 2-disc Ultimate Fan Edition with collectible Lenticular Packaging ($24.96) includes: "a 7-minute sneak peek of "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" which begins with an exciting behind-the-scenes look at the production of the newest film in the franchise. New interviews with stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, as well as with series-creator Stephenie Meyer are integrated with revealing, on-the-set footage of some of the key scenes and sets from the upcoming movie." (--from WalMart.com)
Walmart actually will be offering three different versions of the DVD for sale, so read carefully before deciding on one. They will offer the no-frills 2-disc version for $17.00, and also a combination 2-pack of The Ultimate Fan Edition/Twilight In Forks ($29.99).
Barnes & Noble offers an Exclusive Edition of the New Moon DVD ($23.09). It contains the standard 2-disc Special Edition set, but also includes a Dreamcatcher bag clip. The bag clip features a metal dangle finished in antique brass that combines a circular dreamcatcher, a sculptural Wolf Pack-tattoo charm, a Wolf Pack jewelry tag, feathers, and crystals.
Amazon.com will give you access to the movie on-demand if you pre-order it ($20.99). Apparently, it works like this: "Watch the Video On Demand rental on your PC, Mac, compatible TV or compatible device at no charge when you pre-order this DVD from Amazon.com. You will have 30 days from the release day to begin watching your rental and will have 24 hours to watch it once playback begins. On release day the Video On Demand version will be available in Your Video Library and is provided as a gift with disc purchase." (--from Amazon.com)
Best Buy has their own special edition, too. The Exclusive Steel Book Package ($24.99), which consists of the standard 2-disc version and comes in a steel case and contains a card for a free New Moon cellphone skin. What's a Steel Book? Read this article to find out.

Saddened by the fact that the Target one does not include a digital copy like their version of Twilight did :( That's why I got theirs last year, as well as the Borders one. I will be getting the Borders one again, because they match...but might just buy a digital copy, instead of one of the other copies this year.
I'm not sure which one to buy. The Wal-Mart is so attractive to me because of the 7-minute scene from Eclipse. 7 whole minutes!!!!! But you know that those seven minutes will be out on YouTube by the next day! Besides, eventually, I'll have those seven minutes on a full-length Eclipse DVD. So, what else? Well, I suppose that a cell phone skin might be nice, and the SteelBook case is kinda cool.
On Twilight, the Target edition was the one with the only truly new scenes--the vampire kiss sequence was fantastic, especially the scene showing Edward attacking Bella in Biology class.
It's hard to tell from the description whether Walmart edition will actually have any added scenes.
Agree with Debnog that the Eclipse scenes are not a big deal since we'll be owning that movie anyway. Would rather pay for extended or deleted scenes, and don't know which version is the best for that.
Also, I just found these Q and A comments about the Wal Mart Ultimate Fan Edition...
"Q:
Summit just approved a DVD buying guide/chart that does not have the Walmart version listed as including deleted and extended scenes. Summits approval of the chart makes it look like they won't be included."
This question was never answered.
Further on, another question appears:
1 answer
Q: WHAT FEATURES WILL the twilight saga:new moon(The Ultimate Fan Edition) have?
A: It will have the same features as the standard two disc but it will have the eclipse footage too.
Okay, now we're getting somewhere. SOOOO...the Ultimate Fan Edition doesn't come with other additional content EXCEPT for the Eclipse 7-minute preview, and footage of the production of Eclipse.
I found this to be most helpful...it's a spreadsheet of all the special gifts and content available from Target, WalMart, and Borders (the only three with additional content):
New Moon Spreadsheet
Sorry, I forgot to give credit where credit is due for this excellent spreadsheet made by NKhpTwihard at TwiFans. Nice work!
I was disappointed that the Walmart Fan edition didn't have any deleted scenes as part of the special features. Isn't that just standard now-a-days?? Oh well. Other than that the bonus "making of" documentary was cool. That's the one I bought.
I bought the Target one, but I havent watched it yet. I think it has deleted scenes. You can borrow it. Still no digital copy on it, though. I wonder where you can get a digital copy? It doesn't look like any of the versions available contain a digital copy.
