Online discussion of Tantalize

Have you started reading our second selection? It's Tantalize, a cool vampire novel set in an Italian restaurant. I read this when it was first published last summer, and couldn't put it down. The book is cleverly written, and sectioned into portions like a restaurant menu. Clearly, the author intends for us to savor and enjoy the "meal" as we digest this book!

The characters are great--let me introduce you to my friend, Quincie. She's smart, pretty, and brazen, and even though she's still a teen, she has a mind for business and mystery!

Thanks for your kind words and for being such great fans of YA fantasy! Your blog is gorgeous, and I'm happy to learn of your real-space club.

You may be interested to know that the next book in the Tantalize universe will be Eternal (Candlewick, Feb. 2009). It features different main characters, though keep your eyes open for cameos.

Then the two casts will crossover in a third novel, Blessed, which I'm writing now. There's also a Tantalize graphic novel adaptation in the works, told from Kieren's POV.

Watch for my announcement about your blog later this week at Cynsations!

I'm re-reading the book in preparation for the book club (in-person discussion) on Nov. 6. I had forgotten about some of the finer nuances about the book. Cynthia Leitich Smith, if you are still checking this blog, I want you to know that I think you are a master at word-smithing! As I was reading, I kept stopping, and really looking at the structure of the paragraphs, the chapters, and really, the entire plot.

I'm so glad that the teens are going to be reading this, because I really feel like this book is a little more sophisticated than some of the other titles we are reading. As an adult, I think it stands up nicely as a book for adults as well. The romance, the twists and turns, and the overarching mystery make it fun for us middle-agers!

And Juliana, I'm with you---can't wait to get another book in this series!

I liked the book a lot. I didn't like it nearly as much as I liked The other books we've read but I did like it. I don't think I liked how it ended. I think it should have told more about Quincie and Kieren's relationship. But I liked all the twists and turns.

Good comments, Shelbi! I would have to agree with you that it would be nice to see a little more develop between those two characters, but on the other hand, it's refreshing to see a male romantic lead NOT be so dripping with oversentimentality. I mean, sometimes characters like Edward and Stefan (Vampire Diaries)come across like obsessed stalkers.

[Wait---before you all come after me for that, just consider how Edward "forbids" Bella to visit LaPush...that would seriously NEVER happen in my world!]

Also, I like to think that perhaps what the author is trying to show us is that Quincy is a strong, independent girl who has to think for herself, and make decisions that no normal teen has to make. Sure, I'd like to see a little more romance between Quincy and Kieren, but the story is really about Quincy. Kieren is a secondary character.

Just my 2 cents...
